It’s no secret that MLB is trying to make games shorter to accommodate TV schedules in a better way and to keep fans engaged and focused.

Through the use of a pitch clock that essentially chops off most of the “dead” time between pitches, games are about half-an-hour quicker than last year.

That’s good for mostly everybody, but beer sales have been lower than last year because games are shorter.

Some teams have decided to extend beer sales through the eighth inning and not the seventh like the current common practice.

That way, they can mitigate some of the lost revenue with the quicker pace of games.

However, not everybody believes extending the beer sales an extra inning is smart thinking.

Philadelphia Phillies reliever Matt Strahm is against the idea.

“In response to shorter game times, some MLB teams will allow fans to buy beer in the 8th inning. Phillies pitcher Matt Strahm doesn’t think this is a good idea,” Yahoo Sports tweeted, quoting the pitcher.

He does make a very good point.

Will the league be willing to consider moving the beer sales to the sixth inning to allow fans to sober up and drive home safely?

We would say that’s unlikely, especially when some organizations have even moved beer sales until the eighth inning.

There might be other forms for teams to recoup some of the beer sales money lost with the quicker pace of games, but let’s remember that it was the league itself – and, as a result, the owners –  who decided to make games faster and shorter.

At the end of the day, it’s all a business.
