Professional athletes have a lot of things to worry about from training to diet, to media, to financial obligations, to family, to film study, and much more, but one thing fans never think about that could be most important of all is the calligraphy that goes into signing an autograph.

Former NFL quarterback and 7-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady recently detailed the progression of his signature over the years in a piece of insight that few athletes ever give.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington shared a video of Brady from Fanatics Fest where he explained the progression of his autograph when looking at a guest’s trading card collection, saying “I always tried to copy how he did it (his dad), but then I realized I should have kind of more an autograph, and then more of a signature.” and added, “I started to make the ‘B,’ and I don’t know if you can see it, but the ‘B’ was a one and a two.”

The card collector did not know about Brady shaping his letter “B” like the number 12, and that kind of insight surely plays into the value of the cards since it adds another variable that lets fans know around what time Brady actually signed each card.

It’s anybody’s guess how many signatures Brady has handed out over the years, but it’s interesting to get this kind of insight.

One would assume that most athletes don’t think about these kinds of things at all, but for a tactician as surgical as Brady was, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
