Even before the 2023 NBA free agency opened, there was another big company making big and surprising moves.
On Friday, ESPN started letting go of a series of personalities that worked for them for years.
Among them was Jeff Van Gundy, who was one of the most entertaining and respected commentators in the game.
Following 16 years with ESPN, Van Gundy was laid off by the multimedia giant, raising a lot of eyebrows around the NBA.
Andrew Marchand and Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post report that Van Gundy could be replaced by Doc Rivers, a former NBA champion head coach.
“Doc Rivers could be an outside choice; especially if his salary demands are offset by what the Sixers still owe him after firing him as their coach.”
Marchand and Glasspiegel add that Rivers is ‘very close’ to Mike Breen, the legendary ESPN narrator.
Breen created a solid tandem with Van Gundy, but that didn’t stop the company from parting ways with him, as they did with other figures like Jalen Rose and Max Kellerman.
Besides Rivers, JJ Redick, Doris Burke, and Richard Jefferson are also mentioned as potential replacements for Van Gundy.
Doc Rivers is a controversial coach who has a history of underperforming in the playoffs.
It’s unclear how his addition would be met by fans, but knowing the quality of players he’s coached during his career, he surely would have some interesting insights into the game.
