The Cleveland Cavaliers still don’t have a new coach, and with the Los Angeles Lakers also needing a new leader, they’re going to have to act pretty quickly.

Now that Dan Hurley has turned down the Lakers, there won’t be that many suitable or feasible candidates available.

With that in mind, Brian Windhorst of ESPN reveals that the Cavs will meet with both Kenny Atkinson and James Borrego this week (via Evan Sidery).

James Borrego and Kenny Atkinson will visit Cleveland this week as finalists for the Cavaliers’ head coach opening, per @WindhorstESPN (https://t.co/Y18cfe3CeT).

This will be a crucial decision for the organization, as they also have to deal with Donovan Mitchell’s situation and his impending contract extension.

Atkinson has proven to be a solid offensive mind, and he found plenty of success after overachieving with a young Brooklyn Nets team before Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving got him fired.

As for Borrego, he’s a very respected assistant coach with a long trajectory, and while his previous experience as a head coach wasn’t particularly successful, he’s been a strong candidate for multiple teams for years now, with the Lakers also having him on their shortlist.

Following another disappointing outing in the postseason, the Cavs must make sure to keep Mitchell there for the long run and keep building around him as their franchise player, and that should open up the door for Darius Garland to find a new home.

The same could happen with Jarrett Allen, as Evan Mobley will be eligible to sign a very lucrative contract extension, and they might not be able to coexist in the frontcourt for much longer.
