The New England Patriots gave their struggling quarterback a fresh start.

Mac Jones will no longer have to deal with Foxboro’s blistering cold, and he’ll head back home to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It’s not much of a surprise to see the Patriots looking to move on from him after everything that has transpired, but it was kind of surprising to see the Jaguars get him as Trevor Lawrence’s backup.

Moreover, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that there were as many as four teams tangled up in trade talks for the Alabama product.

Perhaps, heading back home and working with Doug Pederson is just what Jones needed to get his career back on track.

Nonetheless, he’s not going to take the field often — if at all — for as long as Trevor Lawrence is healthy.

Jones wanted to prove himself and earn the Patriots’ locker room trust again next season by fighting for a starting spot, but that’s no longer going to be the case.

Now, he’ll have to motivate and put some pressure on a former No. 1 pick, as Lawrence has shown glimpses of greatness but failed to take another step forward last season and could need some extra motivation to finally fulfill his untapped potential.

Maybe Mac Jones will get another opportunity to be a starter at some point in his career, as he’s still quite young, but he’ll have to get back to the basics and earn his stripes again.
