The San Francisco 49ers have one major problem heading into the 2023 NFL season, as the quarterback position will be an area of concern until Brock Purdy is 100% and ready to get back to work under center in the Bay Area.

With veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo signing with the Las Vegas Raiders recently, the team signed Sam Darnold to compete with Trey Lance for the starting spot in San Francisco to start the 2023 campaign.

However, the rumors have been swirling about the 49ers potentially shopping Trey Lance, with the team set on Purdy being the long-term starter.

According to David Lombardi of The Athletic, 49ers general manager John Lynch expects to keep Lance in San Francisco.

Of course, this is a typical statement from an NFL general manager that likely wants to keep his options open, especially with the start of the 2023 NFL Draft only a few days away on April 27.

There’s no doubt that Lance is a talented quarterback and may still have a bright future in the league when given the right chance, but San Francisco could be looking to build around Purdy after the rookie’s brilliant performance last season, which led to an appearance in the NFC Championship Game.

Lance has played in only eight games thus far for the 49ers, in which he threw for 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.

He also made an impact on the ground rushing for 235 yards and a touchdown.

It’ll be interesting to see if there’s a market for Lance ahead of or after the upcoming draft.
