The San Francisco 49ers entered training camp knowing a quarterback battle was on the horizon.

After Brock Purdy’s showing over the second half of last season, it was his job to lose coming into camp.

The only thing that could hold him back was the elbow surgery he needed over the offseason.

Yet, Purdy returned to camp on time and has won the quarterback competition.

But, the battle for who would be his backup was also quite interesting.

It was between two former first-round picks, Sam Darnold and Trey Lance.

Despite what the 49ers have invested in Lance, he lost the QB2 battle to Darnold.

49ers GM John Lynch commented on Lance losing the backup quarterback competition

According to KNBR, Lynch said, “I give him a lot of credit because we didn’t tailor an offense around him.”

“Ultimately, Kyle and our coaching staff— they’re tasked to make tough decisions, and believe me, this one was painstaking for them.” pic.twitter.com/DHGDRgo7aT

Despite Lynch talking about the positive strides Lance has made, he will most likely not be a part of their team when Week 1 comes around.

That is because Lance and the 49ers are both ready to part ways.

The 49ers hope to get something back in return, while Lance hopes to find a place where he can compete for a starting job.

Lance has struggled in the preseason, but some teams should still want to take a chance on him.

The 23-year-old has never been given a chance to start games for an extended period.

He won the starting job last year before breaking his ankle in Week 2 and missing the rest of the season.

No one knows what Lance can do as a full-time starter in the NFL.

It would be interesting to see him get a chance on a new team.
