The best player on a ridiculously talented San Francisco 49ers squad, running back Christian McCaffrey, signed a two-year extension on Tuesday to remain with the team.
The reigning Offensive Player of the Year set the bar for the market at his position with the $19 million per year average he now commands.
Adam Schefter reported that not only will he earn $8 million more than what he was set to make in the first two years, but he added $24 million in guarantees.

The two-year, $38 million extension made McCaffrey the highest paid player at a position that has been significantly downgraded in value in recent years.
Teams noticeably moved away from paying top dollar to a single workhorse back.
Instead, they opted to take financial advantage of the relatively short lifespan of NFL backs by utilizing a committee of rushers and paying them far less than their predecessors.
McCaffrey may have reset the market for his peers.
After all, his window of excellence is wide open as his performances are only getting better with age.
Since being drafted out of Stanford in the first round by Carolina in 2017, McCaffrey’s healthy season totals are climbing dramatically.
Last year he scaled to a whopping 1,459 rushing yards for the NFC champions while catching 67 passes out of the backfield.
Faced with a choice that was obvious, San Francisco decided to go all-in on their Super Bowl aspirations and lock up their best player for another two seasons at top dollar.
For McCaffrey, this is a well-earned payday.
