The San Francisco 49ers headed into the 2024 NFL Draft looking for some insurance at wide receiver, as the contract situation with wideout Brandon Aiyuk didn’t look like it was headed in the right direction and a trade seemed more likely than a new deal getting done.

Fortunately, the 49ers were able to draft talented rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall out of the University of Florida, who would be a welcome addition to the receiving corps and give quarterback Brock Purdy another target in the passing game.

Ultimately, 49ers brass was able to negotiate a new deal with Aiyuk, which is a great sign for the team’s offense, which is as deep as any team in the NFL.

However, tragedy struck over the weekend, with Pearsall getting shot in the chest during an attempted robbery, an awful turn of events for the Niners and the 23-year-old.

Fortunately, Pearsall has been recovering well, but according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, he will now start his rookie season on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List.

As a result of that designation, Pearsall will miss at least the first four games of the season, including the opener against the New York Jets on “Monday Night Football,” which will give him time to heal physically and mentally.

Hopefully, Pearsall can get back on the field sooner rather than later during the 2024 NFL campaign.
