The 2023 regular season for the NFL is nearly upon us.
Now is the time that teams begin to release their unofficial depth charts, which tends to cause speculation around the community.
The San Francisco 49ers‘ depth chart had a few surprises, along with the word ‘or,’ which is a growing trend.
As shared by 49ers reporter Sterling Bennett, it appears that Brock Purdy is the team’s starting quarterback.

The aforementioned ‘or’ is between Sam Darnold and Trey Lance, which seemingly leaves their QB 2 spot up for grabs.
The 49ers spent significant draft capital on Lance, using the No. 3 pick on him just two years ago.
Every report out of their camp indicates that the team doesn’t like what they see from Lance, leading to his QB 2 spot on the depth chart.
Lance is also coming off of an injury, which is part of the reason the team brought Darnold in.
One of the largest parts of Lance’s profile indicates that he’ll be a great rushing quarterback.
After an ankle fracture last season, his ability to be mobile is threatened, which could lead to the team’s confidence in Purdy as their QB1.
Purdy tore his UCL during the 2022 NFC Championship, which left his standing with the team in jeopardy.
However, as this unofficial depth chart seems to indicate, all is well with him and he’s ready to go.
Whether he is the Week 1 starter remains to be seen, but this is a step in the right direction for the former seventh-round draft pick.
