Just like many other NBA players growing up in Southern California, Paul George grew up idolizing Kobe Bryant.

He wore his No. 24 jersey in high school and at Fresno State, and the same when he was drafted by the Indiana Pacers.

George then switched his number to No. 13, and he kept using that with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers.

Now, he’s ready to start a new chapter of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, and that includes a new number as well.

As shown by the Sixers on Twitter, George will switch to No. 8 ahead of his first season in the City of Brotherly Love.

This wasn’t much of a surprise, as George had already teased a number change.

George urged the fans to tune in to the next episode of his podcast to share the backstory of why he decided to use No. 8.

Perhaps he wanted to pay tribute to the late Kobe Bryant by wearing the other jersey number he donned throughout the course of his career, but we won’t know for sure until he actually talks about it.

George has turned the Sixers into one of the teams to beat not only in the Eastern Conference but in the league as a whole, at least on paper, and the fans should be very excited about the upcoming season.
