The Philadelphia 76ers have most of their core guys locked and loaded for the future.
Of course, James Harden’s free agency saga is at the top of their priority list right now, but other than trying to get rid of Tobias Harris’ massive contract, we wouldn’t expect many huge free agency moves from this team.
Still, they’re going to be on the market for a backup big man, as Chris Haynes reports that Montrezl Harrell will decline his $2.7 million player option to become an unrestricted free agent.

This is far from a surprise, as Harrell has always been vocal about his desire to play heavy minutes, and he’s constantly left teams where he feels under-appreciated.
Ironically, though, that has been the case with him pretty much everywhere he’s been, even leaving the Los Angeles Clippers right after being named the 2019-20 NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
Harrell is a never-ending source of energy on the offensive glass, but he’s proven to be unable to hold his own on defense as a starter, which is why he’ll always be better suited for the second unit.
He’s got that Bobby Portis-kind of skill set — minus the jump shot — and he’s not the kind of player one could rely upon to give you 30+ minutes a night, at least not on a winning team.
Harrell could still be a valuable piece for a contender if he embraces his role.
He tends to fall off once he feels like he’s not getting enough run, which obviously leads to him playing even fewer minutes.
