The Philadelphia 76ers are a team that has been put into a difficult situation after having another successful season, with superstar center Joel Embiid winning the NBA MVP award for the first time in his career.

Although the 76ers are a legitimate title contender in the Eastern Conference as currently constructed, it appears that a lot of changes could happen this summer, which might alter the outlook for the future in Philadelphia.

Along with James Harden opting into the final year of his deal and requesting to be traded, up-and-comer Tyrese Maxey won’t get paid anytime soon, with the team not wanting to extend his contract this summer, according to Kyle Neubeck of The Philly Voice.

The latest intel on the Sixers’ free agency plans, including a big detail:

This is an interesting development, as it could be argued that Maxey became the second-best player on the squad ahead of Harden and behind Embiid this past season.

That said, he is incredibly valuable to the team moving forward, especially with Harden wanting to be moved elsewhere before the start of next season.

Although this initially seems like a slap in the face to Maxey after he had arguably the best season of his career, the 76ers want to remain flexible right now, as they may be planning to pave the way to be able to sign another max player next summer.

However, the team’s championship window is now unless the team has come to the conclusion that next season might be a wash or at least very difficult to contend without Harden or a player to replace him.
