It seems like every season is the same for the Washington Wizards.
They sign some mid-tier players, get hot for a couple of weeks, and then a string of injuries, or poor play sends them to play-in contention at best.
However, the front office still feels like they have what it takes to compete at the highest level.
So, instead of going through a seemingly long-overdue rebuild, they’re trying to keep the band together for a while longer.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Wizards have already engaged in talks with Kristaps Porzingis over a contract extension, citing that they want to keep him and Kyle Kuzma next to Bradley Beal for the long run.
The Washington Wizards and C/F Kristaps Porzingis are in serious discussions on a contract extension as franchise prioritizes new deals for him and forward Kyle Kuzma, sources say.

Of course, this news was met with some mockery and skepticism by NBA fans, who don’t think the Wizards will be able to compete for a ring with this core of players.
10-12 seed forever, say the Washington Wizards

Ah, yes. The big 3 of Beal, Zing, and Kuz. Serious contenders.

it’s NOT working. why are we extending the players who are making us a 10 or 11 or 12 seed? what’s the strategy.

They’re gonna be mid forever

Notably, the Wizards showed glimpses of great play when their Big 3 was at full strength and on the court.
But Porzingis has been quite injury-prone for the better part of his career, and they couldn’t keep up with the rest of the Eastern Conference this season, either.
Even despite his mammoth deal and recent injuries, Beal could still gauge some nice value in the trade market, with teams like the Los Angeles Lakers always linked to him.
Nevertheless, the Wizards have been reluctant to give up and part ways with their star shooting guard, and this is another step in that direction.
