New York Mets reliever Edwin Diaz suffered an unfortunate knee injury in the World Baseball Classic while playing for Puerto Rico.
No, it wasn’t actually playing: it was while celebrating a key victory.
He tore his patellar tendon in his right knee.
The patellar tendon attaches the bottom of the kneecap (patella) to the top of the shinbone (tibia).
The expected recovery time for that kind of procedure is eight months, although some high-performance athletes have been able to beat that timeframe.
The reliever, arguably the best in baseball when healthy, has already gone under the knife.
He is starting his recovery process.
His wife Nashaly shared part of Diaz’s journey towards being 100 percent healthy.

The pitcher seems to be in a good mood, smiling and waving in the video.
Being in good spirits is important and will help him through the hardest part of his rehab: watching his teammates playing ball and giving their all without being able to help them himself.
The Mets could really use a player like Diaz in the back of their bullpen.
In 2022, he saved 32 games, posted a 1.31 ERA and struck out 118 hitters in just 62 frames.
You could almost say that level of dominance has no precedent in MLB, at least not recently.
Now, the Mets will have more questions than answers in their relief corps, starting with who closes in Diaz’s absence.
David Robertson and Adam Ottavino are fine alternatives, but they don’t come close to Diaz’s utter dominance.
Hopefully he can return to full strength in 2024 and help the team reach its objectives.
