The New York Mets received some bad news just before taking the field on Thursday for Opening Day.
Justin Verlander, their $86 million man, is going to start the season on the injured list.
The Mets themselves offered some details of the situation on Twitter.
“Justin Verlander will be placed on the IL with a low grade teres major strain. He will continue throwing at moderate intensity and we will rescan in a week. We will provide an update at that time,” they tweeted.

It’s obviously a big blow to a Mets rotation that had suffered the loss of Jose Quintana a few days ago.
Fortunately, they have a replacement in place with Tylor Megill, who didn’t make the Opening Day roster but should be now set to join the staff.
There is no telling how much time will Verlander miss, but there are two encouraging developments here.
One, it’s a low-grade strain, which means he could be back relatively soon.
And two, he won’t stop throwing.
When a pitcher gets injured, he often stops throwing and is ordered some rest.
This doesn’t appear to be the case here.
Verlander is the reigning American League Cy Young award winner, and had a 1.75 ERA in 175 frames last year with the Houston Astros.
He was absolutely stellar, but he also enjoyed good health for the most part.
This is a setback for the 40-year-old right-hander, but one that he should be able to overcome in no time.
The Mets need him to achieve their collective objectives.
