MLB Fans React To Tampa Bay Rays’ Embarrassing Opening Day Banner

The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the teams to beat in the American League East for quite a while now.

But the franchise hasn’t exactly been successful throughout the years, and the fans — or lack thereof — can attest to that.

The Rays have no World Series titles despite two appearances in 2008 and 2020.

They’ve won four AL East division titles in 2008, 2010, 2020, and 2021, and they’ve made it to the Wild Card round four times in 2011, 2013, 2019, and 2022.

So, needless to say, it’s not like they have a lot of banners to raise at Tropicana Field.

However, what they did on Opening Day was perhaps the most comical attempt to have something to show for at home games, and it most definitely backfired.

According to The Athletic’s Jordan Moore, the Rays unveiled a 2022 Wild Card round banner shortly before their season opener versus the Detroit Tigers.

In a series they were swept 2-0, scoring just one run. Make it make sense. pic.twitter.com/6938Ghtyyi

Not only was that odd itself, but the fact that they raised a banner for a series in which they were swept 2-0 and only managed to score one run was even more head-scratching.

Needless to say, dozens of MLB fans took to Twitter to crack a laugh at this desperate attempt to have some banners, and the responses were hilarious.

Would you rather see this? I’d take the WC banner over Attendance Champions. pic.twitter.com/djGn7RXs4T

That is embarrassing

All jokes aside, the Rays haven’t been around for as long as some other teams, and they were bottom-feeders for the better part of their history.

But they’ve done a solid job of rising to contention the past three or four years, so maybe they should just wait to get some actual banners.
