The Sacramento Kings have just snapped the longest postseason drought in any of our nation’s four major pro sports leagues, as they will appear in the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2006.
Of course, simply making the playoffs isn’t enough, especially when a team is in third place in the Western Conference, as the Kings currently are.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reminded the team’s fanbase that despite the squad’s solid record, it has only the 12th-best odds of winning the NBA championship.

In some ways, Sacramento will certainly be a tough out once the postseason commences in a few weeks.
The team leads the NBA in scoring at 121 points a game, making them just one of a select few in league history that has averaged at least 120 points a game.
Although he doesn’t get the same type of love that his peers do, point guard De’Aaron Fox has become a bona fide star, and he’s averaging 25.2 points and 6.1 assists per game while shooting 51.5 percent from the field.
Big man Domantas Sabonis also seems somewhat underrated, but he’s putting up 19.1 points, 12.4 boards, and 7.2 assists a contest while shooting an amazing 61.1 percent.
However, there is reason for concern.
If the Kings were to face the Golden State Warriors, who are currently in sixth place, or the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs, they could be in for a quick exit.
The Warriors have struggled all season long, but they have much more of a championship pedigree than any other team, while the Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, plus an all-new supporting cast and have been surging lately.
Still, this can be the first big step back to contention for Sacramento.
