For years, Kevin Durant led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the playoffs.

He helped the franchise gather a strong, big, and loyal fanbase when the team moved from Seattle, becoming one of the biggest sports icons in the area right away.

That’s why it hurt them so much when he shockingly left as a free agent to join the 73-win Golden State Warriors, the very same team that had knocked them out of the playoffs in the previous season.

Durant wanted to pursue a championship after years of shortcomings, and understandably so.

Ring culture stated that players need to be champions if they want to have a legacy, so it wasn’t the fact that he left as much as how he left.

Durant instantly became a villain around the league and even in Oklahoma, and he’s been met with boos and jeers every time he’s come back.

That was the case again when the Thunder hosted the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night.

But after all these years, Durant finally gets it and admits he hurt the fans by leaving the way he did.

KD added that he still felt more love this time around and claimed that he’ll always have strong feelings for the team, the community, and all the people he met during his time in OKC.

“I understand it. I meant so much to this community and just for me to leave like that. Early on, I didn’t get it.”

Truth be told, Durant might as well be the greatest player in franchise history, and maybe booing him isn’t fair after all he did with the team.

But the fans also have a right to be hurt, and some will never forgive him.
