The St. Louis Cardinals have found themselves in a bit of a sticky situation recently, as there is a little bit of drama surrounding manager Oli Marmol and center fielder Tyler O’Neill.
O’Neill was thrown out at home by Ronald Acuna Jr. when trying to score on Brendan Donovan‘s pinch-hit single on Tuesday.
After the game, Marmol called out O’Neill for an apparent lack of hustle.
O’Neill ultimately disputed the claim, and the two remain at odds.
On Twitter, Cardinals insider Ben Frederickson commented on the situation and gave an honest assessment about the play at the plate and how it ultimately caused things to turn sour.
FWIW, what’s going on with O’Neil is not all about one individual play. #STLCards want him playing with all of his speed and athleticism, not varying degrees of it. Balls pulled up on and slowed-down baserunning for guy with elite speed isn’t going to fly. https://t.co/EduecLcBjb

O’Neill has elite speed and is usually capable of scoring on base hits.
Frederickson here is defending Marmol’s take on the situation.
Some will say that Marmol is out of line by continuing to comment about what took place.
Others may say that O’Neill could have been running harder.
Both are ultimately fair points.
The unfortunate reality is that the situation became public, when it could have been handled behind closed doors.
There are always two sides to every story, and this situation is no different.
O’Neill and Marmol clearly have a difference in opinion over Tuesday night’s play at the plate, and are at odds over the situation.
The Cardinals will ultimately have to find a way for the two to seek a truce and move forward.
The last thing the team needs just five games into the season is an issue in the clubhouse.
