For years, NBA players have complained about award voting and who gets to choose All-NBA teams and that kind of stuff.
The system is flawed, and some media members have openly admitted to being “narrative-based voters,” whatever that means.
But as flaky as things are right now, getting the actual players to vote wouldn’t do a lot to help.
Take this year’s All-Star Game as an example.
Second-overall pick Chet Holmgren has yet to make his NBA debut, yet he got multiple All-Star votes, and that happens every year.
The same goes for All-NBA voting.
Obviously, some players hold grudges and allegiances toward others, so getting them to choose who gets or doesn’t get tens of millions of dollars worth of contract extensions might not be the wisest idea.
Still, it’s become evident that most of the players don’t usually agree with the media.
That seems to be the case again with MVP voting this season, as Shams Charania of The Athletic recently reported that most players side with Joel Embiid, as opposed to Nikola Jokic, the media’s candidate.
The NBA MVP award is a media vote, but what players think also matters.

Truth be told, both players are more than deserving of the award, yet the common belief among players is that Jokic isn’t actually the best player on Earth.
Jokic seemed like a lock to win his third consecutive MVP this season, all but confirming his status as a future Hall of Famer.
Now, Embiid might as well snatch the trophy right from his hands, but it’ll all come down to the wire and whether the media can overlook his controversial statements and joyful character.
