Earlier this week, former NFL MVP Cam Newton sent out a somewhat strange message for a player that didn’t play a single down for a team in the league last season.
In classic Newton fashion, the 33-year-old admitted that he’d be content with taking a job as a backup in the NFL.
A humbling statement for a player once considered a superstar and among the league’s elite at the quarterback position.
However, he couldn’t help himself as he went on to list the quarterbacks in the league that he didn’t mind playing behind or mentoring moving forward, which isn’t going to sit well with a lot of people, as former NFL superstar Shannon Sharpe talks about on Undisputed.
.@ShannonSharpe reacts to Cam Newton’s latest plea to get back into the NFL:
“Cam Newton was out of the NFL last year then comes in with a wishlist. There’s a reason teams haven’t called; his arrogance blinds him.” pic.twitter.com/7Aym8O5zBP

Sharpe makes a good point because a player can’t pick and choose who he’d like to backup if no teams in the league are calling in the first place, and by all accounts, Newton was getting zero interest from teams last season.
So even though Newton is ready to assume a new role in the NFL as a backup quarterback, he’s still talking like a starter with an ego that has yet to be checked.
At this point, Newton’s future in the league looks bleak.
It was bad enough that Newton lost his job as a starter with the New England Patriots to a rookie, with Bill Belichick eventually deciding to make the switch to Mac Jones a couple of years ago, but after a failed second stint with the Carolina Panthers, it seems like the writing is on the wall.
