Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox got a little bit tense as the two teams exchanged words after a collision at the plate involving Oneil Cruz and catcher Seby Zavala.
Cruz slid hard and ultimately went down, clutching his left ankle.
After Cruz and Zavala exchanged words, the benches cleared and the former was carried off the field.
At the end of the game, it was revealed that Cruz had fractured his left ankle on the play.
On Monday, Pirates writer Kevin Gorman provided an unfortunate update on Cruz, who may now be out for the entire season.
Gorman revealed that surgery was required for the star shortstop and that he underwent his surgery on Sunday night after the Pirates’ 1-0 victory over the South Siders.
Source confirms that Pirates SS Oneil Cruz underwent surgery last night for his fractured left ankle, injured during a home plate collision Sunday. @KodyDuncanPGH reported last night that Cruz’s injury would require surgery.

No timetable has been revealed yet for Cruz.
However, given the severity of his injury, he may be lost for the entire season.
This would be a major blow for the Pirates, who have started off the 2023 season surprisingly well, winning six of their first nine games.
Pittsburgh is also just one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the NL Central.
However, the mood has changed in Pittsburgh with Cruz now on the shelf.
The star shortstop is one of many reasons why the team is looking forward to the future.
And the injury to Cruz certainly doesn’t help matters as the Pirates try to catch the Brewers.
Pittsburgh will begin a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Monday.
