The situation at quarterback for the New England Patriots is a mess right now, with a lot of speculation brewing about head coach Bill Belichick not being happy with Mac Jones and possibly wanting a change under center.
Rumors have been swirling about the Patriots potentially being interested in superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, which isn’t great news for Jones.
The recent signing of Odell Beckham Jr. may indicate the Ravens are on the verge of finally seeing eye-to-eye on a new contract for Jackson, and that could impact New England’s plans if the team indeed intended to pursue Jackson.
Despite how the Jackson situation unfolds, it seems that Jones is in a difficult spot, especially with Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated confirming the team no longer being fond of the Alabama product.
“Jones rankled Belichick and last year’s offensive staff with the way he handled adversity. Some of that adversity, of course, was created by Belichick’s unorthodox decision to install Matt Patricia (a defensive coach) as offensive coordinator and Joe Judge (a special teams coach) as quarterbacks coach. So there is plenty of blame to go around. Regardless of how you’d split that blame up, Jones lost support in the building with the way he managed the challenges of the season.” said Breer.
Fortunately for New England, the team still has Bailey Zappe in the fold and may choose to make the switch at quarterback, with Jones becoming the team’s backup moving forward.
Although Zappe wasn’t brilliant during his time under center last season, he did show some promise, and if New England doesn’t make a move to address the quarterback position, he could become the guy the team rallies around in 2023.
