Even though they are second in the AL West as of Tuesday morning, the Los Angeles Angels have a rather mediocre 5-5 record to open the season.
They do have a +13 run differential, though, so things could be worse.
They also could be better.
If they are going to play to their potential, they need their $245 million man Anthony Rendon to produce.
So far, that hasn’t been the case.
He is 3-for-13 for the season, with a .231 average and the same slugging percentage – the three hits have been singles.
He was also suspended for getting into a scuffle with a fan and, upon returning, was hit by a pitch by Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano on Sunday.
He didn’t play on Monday, and there is no telling how much time he will miss.
“Anthony Rendon was not available to hit today. It’s unclear how serious his shoulder soreness is after the HBP on Sunday. Phil Nevin said they’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” Angels insider Sam Blum tweeted.

If the shoulder soreness extends into Tuesday, it’s logical to think the team will perform some imaging on it.
If the issue goes away, he should be back in the lineup in a day or two.
Injuries and inconsistency have gotten in Rendon’s way ever since he signed that mega-deal after winning the 2019 World Series with the Washington Nationals.
He was good in 2020 with a .915 OPS, but it hasn’t surpassed .712 in the last two campaigns.
Angels fans and even the front office are worried and disappointed because Rendon’s production hasn’t justified that considerable investment.
