After falling into a 6-2 hole in the fifth inning, the St. Louis Cardinals found a way to battle back and keep their hopes of winning alive Tuesday night.

The Cards tied the game in the top of the seventh on Nolan Arenado‘s bases-clearing double.

But one swing in the top of the ninth made all the difference in the game.

Nolan Gorman, who hadn’t started due to the team facing a left-handed pitcher, took Colorado Rockies reliever Pierce Johnson deep to put the team ahead 7-6.

St. Louis ultimately won by a final of 9-6.

With his home run, Gorman put himself in the lead for the team.

The young slugger has three on the season thus far.

So far, the Cardinals have been receiving power from an unexpected source.

While Gorman showed flashes of his potential in 2022 and even hit for some power, he’s off to an even better start in 2023.

He’s hitting .321 and has posted a 1.171 OPS in 28 at-bats.

Gorman has also secured the designated hitter job against right-handed pitchers, splitting time with Dylan Carlson.

After 11 games, the 22-year-old now leads the team in home runs and has been providing most of the power for St. Louis.

It may be from an unexpected source, but the Cardinals will certainly take it as they look to bust out of their offensive funk.

Tuesday night was a good start for St. Louis, and it put them in position to potentially walk out of Denver with their second series win of the season.

The team is now 4-7 on the year.
