On Thursday, shocking news hit the world of Major League Baseball when it was announced that veteran left-hander and three-time World Series champion Madison Bumgarner had been designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 33-year-old endured a rough outing on Wednesday in St. Louis, allowing seven runs over just three innings of work.
Arizona had signed him to a five-year, $85 million deal prior to the 2020 season.
Since then, he has been unable to replicate his success from his days with the San Francisco Giants.
MLB Now reacted to the shocking news of Bumgarner’s designation and discussed the implications of such a move by the Diamondbacks.

Jon Heyman commented on the news, saying that he believed when the Diamondbacks signed the veteran lefty, they did so at a good price.
However, he obviously has not been the same pitcher since signing the deal.
Cliff Floyd commented on the fact that Bumgarner does bring valuable veteran experience to a team, but that if there is a young pitcher in the minor leagues who is ready to make an impact on the big-league roster, tough decisions may need to be made.
Ultimately, this is what has taken place with Bumgarner and the Diamondbacks.
Heyman, Floyd, and Brian Kenny went on to talk about the 33-year-old’s postseason resume.
He went on a dominant run in 2014 and helped guide the Giants to their third World Series title in five years.
Bumgarner made his Major League debut with the Giants in 2009 at the age of 19.
