Colts GM Gets Honest About Lying Before The Draft

With days to go before the 2023 NFL Draft, there continue to be rumors about potential moves that certain teams could make ahead of the draft.

One involves the Indianapolis Colts, who have to No. 4 pick, trading up with the Arizona Cardinals in order to get the No. 3 pick instead so they could presumably take a quarterback.

Colts GM Chris Ballard held a press conference on Friday, and he said that every executive tends to lie about their intentions at this time of year.

#Colts GM Chris Ballard was asked how much lying goes on right now:

“Oh, everybody is lying. I might be the most honest one, unfortunately. But everybody is lying. Usually, I just either dance around the question or give you an answer. Today, I’m a dancer.”

He kept it real.

Plenty of the talk that comes from executives seems like nothing more than posturing in an attempt to give their teams some sort of leverage in trade talks.

The Colts are coming off a disappointing 4-12-1 season in which many things went wrong, but perhaps the biggest disappointment was the play of quarterback Matt Ryan.

They acquired him last offseason hoping the veteran would be an upgrade over Carson Wentz, but instead, Ryan started to show his age.

The 37-year-old had perhaps his worst season ever, throwing almost as many interceptions (13) as touchdowns (14) while posting the second-lowest passer rating (83.9) of his career.

One would think a team such as Indianapolis, or for that matter, the Houston Texans, who have the No. 2 selection, would want to take a signal-caller, but nothing is chiseled in stone.

Indianapolis has one of the best running backs in the NFL in Jonathan Taylor, as well as a young stud wide receiver in Michael Pittman Jr., and one would think a good, reliable quarterback could give them at least a puncher’s chance at returning to the playoffs.
