Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts just got a deal of a lifetime.
But as much money as he took, he’s made it clear that he’s not just about that.
In his press conference after signing that huge contract extension, Hurts had one of the most interesting phrases one might hear from any professional athlete: Money is good, but championships are better.
“Money is nice. Championships are better.”

Needless to say, that prompted some mockery on social media, as some fans believed he was humble-bragging after taking the most lucrative deal in NFL history.

I mean, sure? But if that was the case, wouldn’t he have taken a home town discount so there was money left over to pay other top talent? I am a huge fan of his, don’t get me wrong, but this is an easy comment to make when you are getting $51 Mil per year

However, Hurts’ cap hit throughout his new contract isn’t actually that big, so he did do the team some favors here and there.
He took $179 million guaranteed, but the deal is structured in a way that the team will always be in a position to surround him with elite talent, so props to Hurts for that.
His cap hit for the next four years will be $6.15 million, $13.6 million, $21.77 million, and $31.77 million, and those numbers figure to be a bit of a bargain once the salary cap keeps rising.
Hurts might be trying to take a page out of Tom Brady’s book, as Brady always settled for less money than he could’ve had just so the New England Patriots could bring in more help, and that strategy sure paid off.
Still, he’s going to be the highest-earning player in the league for the foreseeable future, although some believe Joe Burrow’s impending contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals could be even more lucrative once his time comes.
