The Carolina Panthers made the obvious choice with the first overall pick on Thursday night.
The Panthers selected Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who checked in as the consensus top quarterback in the class.
Now the work truly begins for Young and the Panthers.
Carolina has not drafted a franchise quarterback since they took Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick in 2011.
The hope is Young can have a similar impact on the Panthers that Newton did.
Although he never won a Super Bowl, Newton was named league MVP and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl.
Playing in the NFC South gives the Panthers a chance to make some noise in a wide-open division.
Shannon Sharpe has high expectations for Young and his career with the Panthers, as shared on Undisputed.

“If you watch this kid play he has it all: touch, velocity, ability to beat you inside & outside the pocket. The ceiling is the Super Bowl.” pic.twitter.com/dz8IoVORkt

When the Panthers decided to trade up for Young, the expectations rose as well.
Carolina gave up a ton to land its franchise quarterback, and the coaching staff needs to make sure it works out.
Young can be a very good player, but he needs some additional playmakers to help him out.
Currently, the Panthers don’t have a particularly strong supporting cast on offense.
If you recall, they traded away superstar RB Christian McCaffrey in the middle of last season.
Their top wide receivers feature an aging Adam Thielen along with D.J. Chark.
That is not going to cut it for this Panthers offense.
It will be interesting to see if the Panthers can add more offensive weapons during the draft.
Now that they have their franchise quarterback, it’s time to build around him.
