The New York Yankees have received the benefit of having a top young star on their roster to start the season.

Top prospect Anthony Volpe was competing for the starting shortstop job and ultimately earned it out of spring training.

Though the numbers for the 22-year-old aren’t great to start the season, he appears to be making some strides.

The Yankees have also taken it upon themselves to put him in a position to succeed.

Lately, Volpe has been hitting from the leadoff spot for the Yankees.

On Twitter, a Yankees fan page pointed out some interesting statistics, showing just how much the move to the leadoff spot has benefitted him.

Volpe has taken 47 at-bats from the leadoff spot this month.

In those at-bats, the star shortstop is hitting .277 with a .393 on-base percentage and a .840 OPS.

For the season, Volpe is hitting .229 with two home runs and eight RBI.

He also has a .703 OPS.

So while the numbers for the season aren’t great, Volpe is making some key improvements, and it’s clear that the move to the leadoff spot has benefitted the young Yankees shortstop tremendously.

Volpe picked up a hit and drove in a run as the Yankees took the series opener from the slumping Texas Rangers on Thursday night.

He was once again hitting from the leadoff spot, where he has found tremendous success at the plate.

New York has also received a bit of a jolt offensively with Volpe hitting at the top of the order.
