Things haven’t gone particularly well for the New York Mets in recent days.

They have lost some games, they have had some crucial pitches injured (Edwin Diaz, Jose Quintana, Carlos Carrasco, and many others), and then their ace got suspended for 10 games for allegedly using illegal substances on the ball when the one he was using, rosin, was legal.

However, the silver lining is that they are still 15-11 and just two games behind the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the NL East division.

There is some excellent news to share on the injury front, too.

“Justin Verlander (teres major strain) stretched out to 69 pitches in a rehab start today for Double-A Binghamton. His line: 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. Next stop: his Mets debut next week in Detroit. Based on his work today, Verlander should be good for ≈ 80-85 pitches in it,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

Just before the start of the regular season, Verlander suffered a teres major strain.

That’s a muscle in the shoulder area, so as you can imagine, the team played things safely and slowly during his rehab.

He will be ready to return from the injured list next week, probably against the Detroit Tigers.

He would have taken a little more than a month.

Per DiComo, he will be able to throw 80-85 pitches in that start against his former team, which would put him in position to get close to 100 in his second start.

Verlander got $86 million to pitch for the Mets over the offseason, after winning the AL Cy Young with the Houston Astros.

It will be a nice boost for a rotation in need.
