After some mild debate, quarterback Bryce Young of the University of Alabama became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.

The one reason some weren’t sure if he was going to be the first player chosen was the fact that he’s listed at just 5-foot-10 and, at most, 200 pounds.

But another undersized Charlotte sports star has come to Young’s support: Muggsy Bogues.

Another undersized star in Charlotte, you gotta love it!! Can’t wait for him to prove the doubters wrong #heartoverheight https://t.co/VpiB73QCvn

Bogues was the No. 12 pick in the 1987 NBA Draft, and after a season with the Washington Bullets, he moved on to the original Charlotte Hornets.

He stood just 5-foot-3, making him below-average in height even in the real world, but his skill and will allowed him to stick around and enjoy a productive 14-year career.

Young may be undersized as well, but he also possesses plenty of qualities that could foreshadow a successful NFL career for him.

He has a strong pocket presence, he can move outside the pocket and throw passes on the run and he has an outstanding instinctual feel for the game.

In fact, one ESPN analyst said on Thursday during the draft that if Young had the size one would expect from an NFL quarterback, he would be talked about as a generational talent.

Most No. 1 picks go to terrible teams, but the Panthers may actually be competitive right away if Young doesn’t do too badly in 2023.

They have two solid wide receivers in Adam Thielen and DJ Chark, not to mention a running back who made the Pro Bowl last season in Miles Sanders.
