The Dallas Cowboys made a few notable picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

But none was more memorable than their second sixth-round pick.

They selected Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn, whose father happens to be a scout for the Cowboys.

It was an emotional moment for Chris Vaughn, who was able to call his son and tell him he was going to be drafted.

In college, Deuce wore the No. 22.

But, that number has not been worn in Dallas since Emmitt Smith left.

So Vaughn has settled for the No. 42.

Deuce Vaughn will wear No. 42, according to the Cowboys’ web site. He knew when he was picked that his Kansas State number wasn’t an option because of Emmitt Smith. “I know that No. 22 is 100 percent off the table, so we’re going to have to go and make something shake,” he said.

No. 42 for a running back is unusual, but Vaughn has taken an unusual path to the NFL.

The only reason Deuce was still available in the sixth round was because of his size.

He is only 5-foot-5, but that did not stop him from being one of college football’s most productive running backs.

Vaughn is a do-it-all running back who can run between the tackles and catch passes.

He had no problem carving up some of the best defenses in college football throughout his career.

Dallas should have a package in place to get him on the field.

He might enter the season as the primary backup to running back Tony Pollard.

Vaughn is a do-it-all player who only struggles in pass protection because of his size.

Selecting Deuce in the sixth round was one of the steals of the draft, as he should be an impact player for many years to come.
