For years, Bill Belichick has completely owned the New York Jets franchise.

It all dates back to his days with the New York Giants when he won a couple of rings, later resigning from his job with the Jets one day after being hired to join the rival New England Patriots.

Up to this day, he owns a 36-5 record as an HC against them, including 14 straight wins.

However, his biggest win against them may have come in the NFL Draft, and it’s one that could hurt the Jets for years to come.

According to Pro Football Network’s Adam H. Beasley, Belichick chose to take a less valuable pick in a trade just to make sure the Jets didn’t get the guy they wanted.

#Patriots HC Bill Belichick reportedly turned down a higher draft pick in order to spurn the #Jets by letting the #Steelers trade up to take the player NY wanted, per @NFL_DovKleiman.#PFN365‘s @AdamHBeasley had this story on Draft Night! https://t.co/1l0XJBhHGr

They had the No. 14 pick and were expected to address their glaring need for a No. 1 option in the passing game.

Instead, Belichick traded back with the Pittsburgh Steelers to gather the No. 17 pick and a little extra, helping the Steelers take Georgia OT Broderick Jones, the Jets’ preferred choice.

That forced his rivals to go with Will McDonald IV instead, and while the pass rusher could still turn out to be great and improve an already-dominant defense, Jones could’ve been a staple to their offensive line for the next decade or so.

Belichick used his pick to land star CB prospect Christian Gonzalez, once again shocking the world when most people thought they’d go with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Zay Flowers, Jordan Addison, or even Quentin Johnson.

So, the Pats may not have done themselves any favors, but at least they made sure the Jets didn’t get their guy, either, which is always a big win in Belichick’s world.
