The New York Giants and star running back Saquon Barkley aren’t exactly seeing eye-to-eye right now on a contract extension, which led to a franchise tag that has yet to be signed.
With Barkley refusing to sign the franchise tag, the 26-year-old will miss mandatory minicamp, which could carry over to training camp and the start of the 2023 NFL season.
It hasn’t been a great situation for the Giants, even though Barkley is clearly one of the best backs in the game and one of the primary reasons for the team’s success last season.
Joy Taylor of Fox Sports believes the Giants need to get a deal done with Barkley, as he is the heart and soul of the team and wouldn’t even be relevant right now if it weren’t for what he has been able to accomplish in New York via Speak On FS1.

Barkley’s contract talks heading in this direction seem to be a common occurrence for running backs around the league lately, as teams seem increasingly reluctant to invest in star running backs with lucrative contract extensions.
Another example of a star running back struggling in contract talks with their team is Josh Jacobs of the Las Vegas Raiders, who sat out minicamp and has been adamant about not signing his franchise tag in order to secure a deal before next season.
Dalvin Cook is another example, with the Minnesota Vikings recently parting ways with the four-time Pro Bowler because they didn’t want to pay him what he wanted.
