The NBA is a league clearly run by the players.

But it’s also a ruthless business, and as such, teams will always make decisions thinking about what’s best for them, which isn’t always necessarily what’s best for the players.

Of course, stars often get the benefit of choosing their next destinations, or at least are told in advance what’s going to happen to them.

Notably, that wasn’t the case with Chris Paul, who found out he was being traded to the Washington Wizards on a plane to New York City to promote his book.

Chris Paul says he found out he was traded on a flight to NY for his @GMA appearance: “In this league, anything can happen. You just figure out what’s next.” This was prescheduled to promote his new book, Sixty-One. pic.twitter.com/pFiwsfCmww

In an appearance on Good Morning America, the veteran point guard cited that he was surprised to hear the news, adding that anything can happen in the NBA, and you just have to be prepared for what’s next.

Still, Paul is highly unlikely to stay in Washington or even suit up for them once.

The Wizards are reportedly exploring all avenues to try and send Paul to a third team, which seems unlikely given how much guaranteed money he’s still owed.

Paul will most likely agree to a buyout with either the Wizards or whichever team agrees to take him on.

His family still lives in Los Angeles since his days with the Los Angeles Clippers, so both teams from Southern California seem like legit options.

The Wizards are finally embracing a rebuild, so they’re not likely to be interested in a player his age and with that steep salary, which is why they traded Bradley Beal in the first place.
