The Warriors Suddenly Have A Historic Backcourt

Chris Paul has been something of a hot commodity ever since news surfaced that he could either be waived, stretched, or possibly traded by the Phoenix Suns.

Many thought he was on his way to the Los Angeles Lakers to team up with his good friend LeBron James.

Instead, the Suns sent him to the Washington Wizards in the trade that has brought them Bradley Beal, and now the Wizards have re-routed him to the Golden State Warriors for Jordan Poole and draft compensation.

The Warriors now have a backcourt for the ages, at least on paper, as they now have three future Hall-of-Fame guards on the same team.

Stephen Curry, of course, is one of the game’s all-time greats and the greatest outside shooter ever who has also changed the game and has inspired a generation of fellow guards to let the ball fly from area-code range.

His starting backcourt mate Klay Thompson is one of the greatest shooters ever in his own right, even if he isn’t quite what he was prior to his ACL tear in 2019 and his Achilles tear a year later.

Paul will now almost certainly come off the bench, and at this point of his career, it’s likely the right move for him.

He remains a very viable and steady point guard and floor general, but his production has dropped lately.

His scoring average has declined for a third season in a row, bottoming out at 13.9 points per game this year, which is a career-low.

It remains to be seen whether he reinvigorates a team that won the NBA championship just a year ago, or whether he continues to decline and hastens the overall decline of an aging Warriors team.
