With the 2023 NBA Draft officially in the books, French big man Victor Wembanyama is already getting the superstar treatment as he heads to Texas for the first time to take his place as the new face of the San Antonio Spurs franchise.

After an emotional night filled with tears and smiles, Wembanyama made his way to San Antonio and was greeted by the Spurs faithful, who haven’t had a legitimate superstar leading the franchise since the days of Tim Duncan.

The Spurs fans were in full force to welcome Wembanyama to San Antonio, which the No. 1 overall pick documented on his Instagram account via NBA on ESPN.

With Duncan retiring in 2016 with the likes of Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett, Spurs fans have been waiting for a long time to root for another potential superstar, which Wembanyama could quickly turn into in San Antonio after a successful stint overseas as a professional basketball player.

Along with Wembanyama leading the way for San Antonio heading into the 2023-24 NBA season, the storied franchise with five championship banners hanging in the rafters at the AT&T Center still has legendary head coach Gregg Popovich calling the shots on the sidelines.

Popovich had flirted with the idea of retirement for a few years now and even once said he’d call it quits when Duncan did, but he’s stuck around long enough to get another shot to build a winner with a humble superstar leading the charge in San Antonio.

There will likely be some growing pains in San Antonio as Wembanyama adjusts to the style of the NBA, but the Spurs’ future looks bright as they finally have hope for success in the post-Duncan era.
