Years ago, the entire NBA went into a frenzy when Kyrie Irving was up for grabs, with multiple teams looking ready to go all-in to sign the star point guard.
That’s not the case anymore, and it doesn’t seem like he has a lot of options to choose from when it comes to his next team.
At least, that’s what Brian Windhorst of ESPN seems to think, recently stating that he doesn’t see any other outcome for him than signing with the Dallas Mavericks.
“The only team in this offseason where I thought Kyrie would have a chance to go that would be outside Dallas, really, would be LA.”

Windhorst explained that the only other team where he thought he could land was the Los Angeles Lakers, but GM Rob Pelinka has already ruled out that possibility by stating that they only intend to retain the guys they have right now.
Moreover, Windhorst stated that the only potential option would be to work on a sign-and-trade with another team, but that would imply the Mavs have any sort of interest in facilitating Kyrie’s departure, which they don’t.
The teams that currently have enough cap space to sign Kyrie have no use for him right now, and vice versa.
This pretty much means that the Mavericks will be betting against themselves in free agency, as Kyrie needs them as much as they need him right now.
Irving would be highly coveted in free agency if it wasn’t for the kind of deal he’s looking for and the new CBA.
Now, all signs point toward him extending that partnership with Luka Doncic, at least for the foreseeable future.
