The date comes with a heavy heart and countless memories, as it marks the anniversary of Steve McNair’s death.
The former Walter Payton Award winner was one of the most beloved and respected members of the NFL community until his death on July 4, 2009 — 14 years ago.
That’s why the franchise took to social media to remember perhaps their best player ever, with countless fans also sharing their thoughts, love, and prayers for “Air McNair.”

Greatest Titan of all Time

My Steve McNair “Stephen LaTreal McNair” rookie cards safely put away. Florida offered him to play RB, but he went to Alcorn St because he wanted to play QB! Some didn’t think he’d make it as an NFL QB, 13 seasons, how wrong they were! 1 of the greatest of all time! #NotForgotten

Every July 4th makes me sad remembering driving home from work and hearing the terrible news on the radio. So sad.

Even though it’s been over a decade since he was found dead, the NFL community hasn’t forgotten about the former MVP — and never will.
One of the most talented players of his generation, the Titans fanbase — and even some of his rivals — constantly reminisce about his heyday.
Throughout his career, McNair passed for a whopping 31,304 passing yards with 174 touchdown passes, adding 3,590 rushing yards.
He was one of the first few dual-threat quarterbacks, a privileged athlete who could scramble his way downfield and who also boasted a rocket for an arm.
McNair led the Titans organization to their only Super Bowl appearance, making it to three Pro Bowls during his days with the franchise.
Unsurprisingly, he was inducted into their Ring of Honor, and his No. 9 jersey was retired back in 2019.
Countless memories come to mind when talking about one of the best players of his generation, and it’s a shame he had to leave us so early.
