It’s been a while since the New York Knicks last landed a superstar.

The team has spent most summers trying to lure every single big-name free agent to Madison Square Garden, constantly falling short of that goal.

Notably, that might not be their approach anymore going forward, as it seems like they’ve finally learned from their past mistakes and aren’t looking to overpay for aging or injury-prone stars.

At least, that’s what Alan Hahn reports happened with Paul George recently.

Alan Hahn on Knicks: “They had a chance to get Paul George. They said it was too expensive, they don’t want to do it. They’ve already backed outta that. They talked to the Clippers, the Clippers gave what it would cost, then Paul George said ‘But I want an extension.’ And they… pic.twitter.com/wamB1M4n1O

Hahn said on Bart & Hahn (via New York Basketball) that the Knicks reportedly had a deal in place with the Los Angeles Clippers to acquire Paul George.

Then, George let them know he wanted a contract extension if he was traded, so the Knicks deemed him too expensive and pretty much backed out of the deal.

Truth be told, adding George to their current mix could be just what they need to get over the hump, granted that he’s a proven star and one of the best two-way players in the league, not to mention a major upgrade over RJ Barrett as their starting small forward.

However, George has a long history of injuries and has struggled with multiple ailments as of late, and he’s already 33 years old, so that might not change for the remainder of his career.

The Knicks have gathered an interesting set of potential trade assets and could be in the mix for any other star that becomes available.

As for George, the Clippers could find it tough to move him under those conditions.
