The New York Yankees announced over the weekend that they had parted ways with hitting coach Dillon Lawson.
They have a below-average offense this year despite a litany of star-level names such as Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu, Josh Donaldson, and Aaron Judge.
Judge should have an asterisk by his name because he has missed nearly half of the Yankees’ games and the offense has looked competent when he has been healthy, but if we exclude him, there are two former MVPs in that group (Donaldson and Stanton), a former young star (Torres), and a batting champ (LeMahieu).
On Monday, it was revealed that the Yanks are replacing Lawson with Sean Casey.
Casey is a three-time All-Star who retired with a .302 batting average, 130 home runs, and 735 RBI.
He had been working as a broadcaster and commentator for MLB Network, but the Yankees are bringing him to the Bronx with the hope to “fix” their ailing offense.
The hire has been praised by lots of people in the baseball universe, including Yankees analyst Chris Kirschner.
“Sean Casey was one of the BEST analysts in baseball. I always learned a ton from listening to him on MLB Network break down the game from a hitter’s perspective. Casey doesn’t have coaching experience so it’ll be interesting to see how it works out but he has a brilliant mind,” he tweeted.

Casey fills the primary need of the position, which is having a modern, brilliant hitting mind.
The second part would be sharing that knowledge with his players successfully.
He will learn that one over time, but he is being given a very nice opportunity to start his coaching career.
