The St. Louis Cardinals have essentially all but buried themselves in the standings.
They sit 11 games back of the San Francisco Giants for the final Wild Card spot and 11.5 back of the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central.
This is thanks in large part to the fact that they went 38-52 in the first half, which is their worst mark since 1986.
Most around the game are expecting the Cardinals to sell off some pieces at the trade deadline.
However, Katie Woo of The Athletic doesn’t think they’ve quite conceded just yet.
On 101 ESPN, Woo discussed this and why she thinks it’s a big mistake by the front office.
Which direction will the #STLCards take at the deadline? @katiejwoo isn’t convinced they know as of yet. #BKandFerradio

Woo talked about how because the NL Central is not the strongest division in all of baseball, the Cardinals haven’t fully convinced themselves that they will be sellers at the deadline.
She made sure to point out that the Cardinals shouldn’t stop trying to improve their team if that is their goal, but also stated that there is a way to essentially punt on the remainder of the season and set themselves up for contention in 2024.
Woo also noted that the Cardinals should not be performing this poorly with the talent on the roster and that the problem is that there are too many positional logjams and no clear roles for certain players.
This is especially true with the outfield.
Woo thinks that the Cardinals could get a jumpstart on their offseason by using some of those pieces to acquire some pitching at the deadline.
