The New York Yankees have decided to allow sponsors on their uniform, as they are welcoming an insurance company that will appear on the sleeve.
The decision has been met with lots of controversy because fans aren’t open to the idea.
They say sponsors and ads on the uniform makes it look cheap, and they might have a point.
Analysts are getting into the heat of the discussion, too.
Sports and business specialist Joe Pompliano offered some details about the sponsorship deal and then provided his take on the matter.
“The Yankees are getting $25 million a year for their jersey patch sponsorship, per @darrenrovell. But man, I hate advertisements on jerseys. It increases the Yankees annual revenue (1st in MLB) by less than 4%. And for a team that preaches tradition so much that players can’t even have facial hair, it just looks cheap on the pinstripes,” he tweeted.

There are a few important things to consider here.
First and foremost, $25 million per year is not an insignificant amount of money, even if it’s a small fraction of the team’s annual revenue.
Second, Pompliano’s second sentence is right on point: if you are going to open yourself to a modern way of increasing revenue, you should at least consider eliminating the outdated facial hair policy; if the idea is keeping things modern.
It’s almost a contradiction to accept sponsorship deals on the uniform but forcing their own players to shave and keep their hair short.
The topic is hot on social media at the moment, and the Yankees are getting a lot of backlash for their recent choice.
