The Boston Celtics knew they needed to shake things up a little bit and take some risks if they wanted to get over the hump.

That’s why GM Brad Stevens didn’t hesitate to pursue Kristaps Porzingis as soon as he became available, even if it cost him one of the mainstays of his team.

Losing Marcus Smart could prove to be a major blow for the team, as it cost them a leader, even if they’re slightly better on paper now.

With that in mind, franchise legend Paul Pierce shared his thoughts on his team’s new look, citing his disappointment over Smart’s departure because of all the things he did for the team’s culture.

Moreover, he claimed that he thought the biggest change the team needed to address was on the coaching staff.

Pierce praised the team for surrounding Joe Mazzulla with top-of-the-line veterans for his coaching staff, citing that losing Damon Stoudamire was a big blow for them.

It was evident that Mazzulla got overwhelmed at times during the playoffs.

Even so, he did manage to even things up after going down 0-3 in a series, and he also held his ground when the Philadelphia 76ers almost sent them packing twice in a series.

He’s got a bright future as a coach, but he also needed some more experienced people around him, and that might make a huge difference for this team going forward, even if they lost a strong and vocal presence in the locker room with Smart gone.
