The Boston Red Sox have outperformed their expectations this year, despite sitting at the bottom of the American League East.

Though they are nine games back of first, they own a 48-43 record and are just two games back of the final Wild Card spot.

The second half of the season begins tonight, and the Red Sox will be turning to their new homegrown ace in right-hander Brayan Bello.

Bello has been on a roll as of late, posting an ERA of 2.22 while striking out 33 batters in his past seven starts.

On Twitter, Red Sox writer Jamie Gatlin pointed out how much of an advantage the Sox could have with Bello on the hill.

In addition to his fantastic stats, Bello has only allowed more than two earned runs in a start once this season.

Bello will draw the start against the Chicago Cubs.

He comes into Friday night’s game with a record of 6-5 and an ERA of 3.04.

The young right-hander has also recorded 70 strikeouts this season.

In his 14 starts he owns a 1.19 WHIP and has pitched a total of 80 innings.

Bello has emerged as the Red Sox’s new ace with Chris Sale out and pitchers such as Nathan Eovaldi and Michael Wacha both now with other teams.

But it’s clear that the Red Sox have something special in the 24-year-old right-hander, and he is the right pitcher to kick off the second half for the team as they look to battle their way into a postseason spot.

Bello will be opposed by Kyle Hendricks.
