The Kansas City Chiefs have laid the blueprint for a successful team in today’s offensive-minded National Football League.

They’ve spent most of their money on the offensive side of the field, going cheap and young when it comes to their defense.

That’s why Colin Cowherd believes the Pittsburgh Steelers simply cannot compete with them right now.

He cited that both are historically great franchises with excellent owners and future Hall-of-Famers coaching them.

Nonetheless, the Steelers seem to be stuck in the past in terms of roster-building, as they continue to spend a lot of money on defensive players, all while they struggle to figure their offense out.

“The Steelers’ world view? More sacks… Success is about staying current.”

Cowherd explained that the Chiefs realized that the new rules don’t allow defensive players to do a lot of the things they could do in the past, which is why they just want to sign a star like Chris Jones to a big deal, and then just add disposable and replaceable players around him.

He pointed out that defensive players get hurt more often and more badly, which is why the Chiefs want young guys that heal faster or that they could simply move on.

That’s an interesting way to explain roster-building, to say the least, and it’s hard to argue with the Chiefs’ success and the Steelers’ offensive woes.

Even so, it doesn’t seem like they’re going to change that approach any time soon, especially after signing Alex Highsmith to such a massive contract extension yesterday.
