The Chicago Cubs had a tough night on Thursday against their hated rivals in the St. Louis Cardinals.

The team fell, 7-2, in the series opener and dropped to 45-51 on the season.

Catcher Yan Gomes drove in the first of Chicago’s two runs with an RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth inning.

He ended up tripling twice in Thursday’s game and scoring the second run in the seventh.

And in doing so, Gomes made a little bit of history.

At 36 years and one day old, Gomes became the third-oldest catcher since at least 1901 to hit two triples in a game.

On Twitter, Sarah Langs of MLB.com pointed out this interesting fact.

at 36 years & 1 day old (happy belated!), Yan Gomes is the 3rd-oldest catcher since at least 1901 with 2 triples in a game, younger than only:

7/17/1928 Wally Schang: 38 y, 330 d
6/19/1901 Deacon McGuire: 37 y, 213 d

The two catchers ahead of him are Wally Schang, who accomplished the feat at 38 years and 330 days on July 17, 1928, and Deacon McGuire, who accomplished the feat on June 19, 1901 at the age of 37 years and 213 days.

And so, Gomes joined a historic club on Thursday night.

It wasn’t enough to save the Cubs from a loss, but it was some impressive history that was made by the veteran catcher.

Gomes has spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Indians, Washington Nationals, and Oakland Athletics in addition to his time with the Cubs.

He broke into the Major Leagues in 2012 at the age of 24.

11 years later, he now finds himself in a very unique position as the third-oldest catcher since 1901 to have tripled twice in a single game.

This comes just one day after Gomes’ 36th birthday.
