The San Diego Padres have been one of baseball’s biggest disappointments this season.

The Padres own a record of 49-54 and are six games back of the third Wild Card spot in the National League.

They are seventh in the Wild Card race and sit in fourth place in the NL West, 10 games out of first place.

But with the trade deadline approaching, there is speculation that the Padres may ultimately sell and try to gain some assets in return.

According to Bob Nightengale, several teams have spoken with the Padres in recent days and believe that they ultimately will trade Blake Snell and Josh Hader, both of whom are impending free agents.

The Padres have played better in recent weeks, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t ultimately sell at this year’s trade deadline.

The deadline falls on Tuesday, August 1 at 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

With both Hader and Snell set to enter free agency, the Padres could ultimately look to capitalize on their value and gain assets for the future in an attempt to retool for 2024.

Hader was acquired by the Padres at the trade deadline last year, arriving from the Milwaukee Brewers in what was seen as a very lopsided trade.

But with the Padres struggling to stay in contention, it might not be a bad idea for the team to trade him and Snell and see what they can get in return instead of holding onto them and ultimately receiving nothing more than a compensatory draft pick should they depart.
